PremRock, “Lens”

April is going to be the month of rappers referencing literary icons in their album titles. Next week RATKING will release So It Goes, their XL debut, and on April 15 PremRock is following suit with A Clean, Well-Lighted Place. On PremRock's first single from the full length, “Lens”, he claims his looking glass is of a different model and make than the average rapper, this is how he gains an advantage.

Produced by Quelle Chris, “Lens” is PremRock feeling antagonistic towards the suckers and middle men that clog his lane in the industry. He's got few kind things to say to music publicists, boom bap purists, and nonthreatening rappers. Even Jakob Dylan isn't safe from Prem's criticisms, somehow turning a “One Headlight” reference into a one-liner diss.

His previous record, Mark's Wild Years, was a concept record based around Tom Waits samples. If “Lens” is a proper indication of PremRock's head space on A Clean, Well-Lighted Place, then this is the New York rapper getting down to brass tacks and holding no punches. The album features a guest appearance by Curly Castro and production by Blockhead, A.M. Breakups, Marmaduke, Steel Tipped Dove, Has-Lo, and Small Pro.

PremRock's A Clean, Well-Lighted Place is out April 15.
