Classic hip-hop icons took over Crotona Park to celebrate the legendary DJ’s 40 years on NYC airwaves
A devoted crowd and a stacked lineup of classic rappers and DJs turned out on a scorching hot day at Crotona Park in the Bronx this past weekend to celebrate legendary DJ Chuck Chillout’s 40 years on New York City’s airwaves.
Unfortunately, Chuck himself was feeling under the weather and could not attend the festivities, but Ralph McDaniels of Video Music Box ably stepped in to host in his absence. WBLS and Sirius XM’s Fred “Bugsy” Buggs also came out to address the crowd and pay tribute. At one point, McDaniels broadcasted the show live on his socials so Chuck could take in the scene remotely. Another slight snag in the day’s plans hit as a number of acts – including Ice-T, Schoolly D, Ultramagnetic MCs, and MOP – wound up not showing up, resulting in DJs such as DJ MU and Funk Flex spinning extended sets to make up the time.
But that didn’t stop the crowd from showing out for the rappers who did kill it that night. That included Joeski Love, who performed his platinum-selling 1986 single “Pee Wee’s Dance.” Later, hardcore rap innovator Nine played a ferocious set that featured a guest appearance from Hit Squad member Jesse West. The evening saw solo shows from CL Smooth and Peter Gunz, who also combined forces to preview a song together from their upcoming EP Da Odd Couple. To top if off, Lost Boyz MC Mr. Cheeks closed the night out and brought Freaky Kah out with him – son of the late Lost Boyz member Freaky Tah, who was killed in 1998. And although not officially on the bill, Busy Bee Starski came out earlier in the day to perform a track.
All in all, it was a stellar day of celebrating old school NYC hip-hop, and a fitting tribute to Chuck Chillout’s 40 years on the city’s airwaves (and counting). Feel free to check out scenes from the party below.
