Inside ETA’s anticipated EP—PAST HYPE photographed by Chaz Medlock.

Continuing our coverage of the multidisciplinary art realm of LA’s own ETA, we present you the just released PAST HYPE EP that offers up an intimate cycle of introspection numbers & collaborations. ETA offers up a listen to the precursor to the forthcoming release Heaven’s the Ceiling, which will be a collaboration with his band of the same name, PAST HYPE, featuring Cullen Griffin on guitar, Ian Peacock on percussion & Michael Klein on keys.
“Swoon” deals with the passages and changes that come complimentary with life’s territory, as ETA maintains the refrain of “only time will tell” sung along to some sparse & haunting electric chords. The previously adored single “Dyin’ (Going Thru It) ft. Eddington Again & tomemitsu is triumvirate of Los Angeles powerhouses that join forces to bring a surreal song that breaks through the mortal coil for something more. Eddington offers up reinforced vocals of urgency as tomemitsu strums away and ETA’s delivery is heard like a smoky desperado singing songs of experience by the campfire glow. Those trademark atmospheres are everywhere on “secondwind” that features back-up from Allswans that is the sound of floating about on the surface of a lake beneath the midnight’s sky. The finale of “exuberant demise” that features vocal samples from Thai auteur Apichatpong “Joe” Weerasethakul that ponders those final moments of awakened existence that sails off toward recalled cinematic experiences remembered that are carried off into the great ever more. ETA introduces the new EP with the following candid reflections:

This EP seemed like it happened in an unexpected burst. I was focused at the time on directing music videos and had no plans for making music, but suddenly I was writing songs.
There was a lot of heartbreak and frustration in my life. I was floating somewhere between this objective holism and raw emotional pain—it was overwhelming. I felt very detached from myself and the present.
These songs are about the process of reconciliation. Coming to terms with all this metaphysical weight. The contents of this EP helped bring me back to earth and step back into my body, so that I could begin healing.
