Chelsea High Line, first frost

The High Line used to carry freight trains one and a half miles through Manhattan's West Side, but since 1980 it has lain fallow. Last week, during winter's first snowfall, Sam Horine crept along the desolate tracks from Midtown to Chelsea, witnessing what, with $50 million earmarked by the city government, in a short time will be transformed into an accessible public park that will better serve Manhattan's burgeoning condo community. Until then, here are the ghostly remnants of a distant industrial past and the weeds and street art that have sprouted in the interim.
