On Friday, August 31, Brownsville, Brooklyn's Ka played Public Assembly with Queens' own Big Baby Gandhi and New York City's Billy Woods
Ka has been around forever but this year has seen the release of his second album, the stripped-bare self-produced Grief Pedegree which recalls the head knock style of Roc Marciano on whose 2010 album Marcberg Ka appeared. Ka's credentials were on display as he rapped in front of a projection of Style Wars. The crowd was hyped most knowing every word which they shouted out with Ka enthusiastically. Ka fed on this and his style became more casual as the show went on, becoming more animated and his smile larger with each song.
Big Baby Gandhi has been making more and more live appearances since his debut in January and each one shows the young rapper becoming more comfortable with the live aspect of his music. As with every Das Racist related performance, the Greedhead army was out in full force as Lakutis, Mike Finito and Himanshu Suri were in the audience, and in Himanshu's case on the stage acting as BBG's impromptu hype man.
billy woods is having a great year. 2012 has seen the release of the universally acclaimed History Will Absolve Me, returning the veteran back to the public consciousness with an album full of hard beats wrapped in hard truths. billy woods wasn't so harsh as his album, though he performed with an intensity befitting his sound, he never forgot it was a party and showed love to everyone at Public Assembly.
