Wild Adriatic, “Appleton”

Post Author: Meredith Schneider

New York’s rock & soul power collective Wild Adriatic – comprised of Travis Gray (vocals, guitar), Rich Derbyshire (bass), and Mateo Vosganian (drums) – has been our touring, hitting the festival circuit hard this past summer. And it doesn’t look like things are slowing down, as their winter dates are many and it looks as though they are set to start 2017 with a bang. Between all the madness, however, they have managed to get us the exclusive premiere of their lyric video for “Appleton”.

Mateo had quite a bit to say about the track itself.

“Appleton” came about during a writing retreat we took in Appleton, Wisconsin last year. Appleton has quickly become our second home after playing several of our favorite shows in town and establishing life-long friendships and inspiring artist relationships with folks from the area. Lyrically, the song focuses on a broken relationship that’s stuck in a cycle of drama. At a certain point in relationships it’s hard to let go of all of the things two people can put each other through. No matter how challenging our personal lives can get, even when we feel our most vulnerable and frustrated, Appleton has remained a place of sanctuary for us. Musically the song contains a lot of the joy & energy we feel when going back to Appleton, regardless of the relatively depressing lilt of the lyrics.

The video is perfect for the holiday season, as the band sets the sound on vinyl under flashing, colorful lights and a disco ball. The guys sit together on a couch to listen to their creation, something that is so intense and vibey that we can’t stop moving our hips. While you groove, you follow the groove of the needle on the vinyl. It takes place in what looks to be a secondhand shop, and the guys play out their version of dressing room scenes while they sift through records, hats, bins of odds and ends, and groovy everything. It’s fun, it’s light, and it’s awesome.
