It’s easy to draw comparisons between Concord America and bands like Wavves, FIDLAR, and Atlanta brethren The Black Lips, but don’t write them off as simply more of the same surf-inspired fuzz pop. “So Gay” is the tongue-in-cheek single off the power trio’s latest EP, Suns Out Guns Out, the follow-up to last year’s inspired Shag Nasty. Snort at its title if you must, but “So Gay” is for anyone who’s ever felt “so lonely” (check) or “so lazy” (again, check) in matters of the heart.
For Concord America, though, the problem goes even deeper. Whether our protagonist’s lady friend actually believes he’s batting for the opposite team is debatable; regardless, the sting of true romantic regret leaves its mark, despite the track’s sunny disposition. As a slicing guitar cuts through even the poppiest of “oh yeahs,” you can almost taste the bitterness. Dude—we feel you.
Concord America's Suns Out Guns Out EP is out May 27 on Post-Echo.
