Genre is a dirty word

Over at The Millions, Kim Wright has a great piece about literary writers jumping into genre. For some it's desperation, for some it's the dolla bills, for others it's creative freedom. Here's something else: maybe readers like stuff to happen. That's a tough one.

Anyway, Wright enjoys word combinations like “literary thriller” but she also delivers this money (ha!) quote:

...this crappy market may actually end up producing better books. Because hybrids, bastards, and half-breeds tend to be heartier than those delicate offspring that result from too much careful inbreeding.

No one likes too much inbreeding.

So, do you like some vampies with your unemployed/overeducated angst? Like some apocalypse to go with your wandering of the big city?
