Over at The Millions, Kim Wright has a great piece about literary writers jumping into genre. For some it's desperation, for some it's the dolla bills, for others it's creative freedom. Here's something else: maybe readers like stuff to happen. That's a tough one.
Anyway, Wright enjoys word combinations like “literary thriller” but she also delivers this money (ha!) quote:
...this crappy market may actually end up producing better books. Because hybrids, bastards, and half-breeds tend to be heartier than those delicate offspring that result from too much careful inbreeding.
No one likes too much inbreeding.
