Austin’s a weird place. But contrary to the belief of aging hippies, it’s got less to do with the “keep Austin weird” stickers that they keep plastering on the back of their Volvo station wagons and more to do with a steady output of bands like the Dicks, the Butthole Surfers, and, more recently, Spray Paint. Since forming in 2011, the three-piece post-punk group has burned through two full lengths and have just announced plans for a third, Clean Blood, Regular Acid, due on September 23 via Monofunus Press.
In anticipation of their new album, Spray Paint has debuted a new single “Rust Versus Rust”, which showcases their minimalist style and penchant for obscure, foreboding lyrics. Over a single-note bass line and atonal guitar squabbles, Cory Plump sings lines like “You were always such a bitch back when you could walk, but that’s not why I took the dull axe to your neck,” before the song bursts into periods of total sonic confusion.
