Last night, a post appeared on digital maven Grimes' Tumblr making a strong plea for what should be considered standard practice in music (and, frankly, elsewhere). In just under 600 words, the producer and musician covered her feelings regarding the way women are treated in her industry. The post is titled “I don’t want to have to compromise my morals in order to make a living” and it's a thoughtful, well-constructed manifesto on gender equality, especially when it comes from a woman who has the power of voice in the music and fashion worlds. More often than not, women who are treated unequally in the way Grimes is referring to don't get the same opportunity to speak out and reach millions of followers. They simply have to accept it.
By no means should the post be watered down, so you can check out the whole thing here. The most important sentiment from her plea comes from this quote: “I’m sad that my desire to be treated as an equal and as a human being is interpreted as hatred of men, rather than a request to be included and respected.” There's nothing like having someone say the right thing with the right words at the right time. Let's just pray that Grimes doesn't delete the post, as she's done before.
