After several years of building his name in the New York underground, Queens MC Akinyemi is ready to make the next major jump in his career. On September 1st, he will be releasing summers, his debut EP. Though September 1st is looked at as the unofficial end of Summer, timing doesn’t mean much to the young rhymer. Akinyemi has been patient enough to hold “dust calling,” the lead single for summers, since July of 2016.
He regards “dust calling” as his crown jewel. One listen to Akinyemi’s lyrical maneuvering through the entrancing soundscape justifies his belief. Though the track is the lead song from summers, the soundscape radiates vibes of a venture through a chilly night, with Akinyemi’s dense lyricism as the only tour guide. The track inadvertently picks up on the Queens lineage artists like Mobb Deep and Nas laid forth in that regard.
“Door unopened, hope they let me in” he ponders amidst the hook’s glittery keys. If summers is full of tracks like the pensive “dust calling,” they won’t have a choice. You can stream on Spotify here, and listen on Soundcloud below.
