Electronic dance maven Boys Noize is busy crafting music for Oliver Stone’s Snowden film and DJing across the world, but he still had enough time to tap Danny Brown and New Orleans-born rapper Pell to add vocals to his “Birthday“ track. The vocals of Brown and Pell augment the massive track with an even more rambunctious, carefree vibe.
Whereas many electronic tracks may leave minimalist pockets for rappers to get off their bars, “Birthday’s” structure provides a challenge for both MCs. Spank Rock chants his “everyday I wake up and feel like my fuckin’ birthday” refrain on the sparkling chorus, before a wall of layered, grandiose synths tsunamis through the soundscape, forcing both MCs to compete with the relentless composition.
That’s no problem for Danny Brown, who delivers a characteristically rowdy verse. Pell matches the track’s intensity with equally passionate bars, bouncing off of the synth hits with a melodic delivery. The track was co-produced by Hudson Mohawke, and is just the first of new music to come from Boys Noize, who released MAYDAY in May.
