There is a story behind Busdriver’s latest track “Worlds To Run”. The presence of Kenny Segal and milo as it coincides with the release of milo’s So The Flies Don’t Come is no coincidence, but rather a catalyst. Segal wrote in a recent email that he made the beat after attending Low End Theory Festival in 2014. At the time milo was crashing on his couch and upon hearing it, began writing his verse. The two wrote three songs shortly after that sent So The Flies Don’t Come under way. As for “Worlds To Run”, it went to Busdriver for his upcoming mixtape, Thumbs.
After a decade of what feels like buffaloed energy in indie rap by no fault of its proprietors, indie rap is rediscovering its soul. Guards are coming down, skin is being shed, and egos are parsed to the minutia of their central pain. Gross generalizations be damned! There simply was something missing from Busdriver’s music, even in its attempts to reconcile personal damages on Beaus$Eros, that suggested an ornate armor defending the heart. Busdriver is aware in his claim to have come from a dead world and comparisons of Leimert Park to Winterfell. On “Worlds To Run” the braggadocio is issued from familial roots—”I can run the world from my momma’s house”—while the naked truism arrives in the Anderson Paak’s refrain “when you deep in the raw / there’s only so much truth you can keep in your jaw.”
