The members of Childbirth are no strangers to celebrating the gross stuff. The group includes members of Chastity Belt and Tacocat who have done photo shoots with slabs of meat and written songs about going to the beach on your period, respectively, playfully invoking the well–documented relationship between female lived experience and the bodily abject. “Nasty Grrls” continues this tradition, yelping triumphant call-and-response lines about not washing your hair and having dirty fingernails over droning fuzz-guitar and a confidently chugging rhythm section. It’s a catchy tongue-in-cheek anthem that speaks to how deeply personal behaviors become political when they challenge highly-policed gender standards.
