Craft Spells, “Komorebi”

Craft Spells

Discover organic orchards and other worlds of decorum and discovery on the new Craft Spells track, “Komorebi”. Featuring the rhythm piano of frontman Justin Vallesteros, the notes travel to fields of strings and woodwind orchestras that further open the gates of space and perception off the upcoming album, Nausea, for Captured Tracks. Like the expository views into the interior intimacies of Idle Labor, and Gallery, Nausea finds those kindred places and settings to sort out and configure the geography and placement of the self in the world and city.

“Komorebi”, Japanese for “sun light filtered through the trees” descends like pensive, mid-day lullabies. Justin creates a moment of pause to gather the particulars of location, direction, and the correlative maps that obsess over life and thoughts on mortality. “Take the time to know, how alone you are in this world, just to find, death is on your mind, as you stand still, you realize where you are in the world.” Vallesteros takes to the western songwriting paradigm with an eastern minded delivery that slowly unfolds a panoramic of sprawling area expanses to lie as dwelling places for personal musings. The piano and flute cast celestial beams over “Komorebi”, sending sounds of solace like care packages sent from the clouds. The vast production reminds me of how late night walks down city blocks softly become that moment in time between four and five in the morning, where the interplay of astronomy and atmospheres hover between the states of day and night.

Craft Spells' Nausea will be available June 10 from Captured Tracks.
