Fiend rises from the blunt ashes

International Jones

For those who are old enough to remember when Master P was the general of the rap world, cruising around in a golden tank, the name Fiend might ring a bell or two. He was the gruff-voiced rapper that said “whomp whomp” in all his guest verses.

Fiend's post-No Limit career consists of four albums over the course of the Aughts, most of which were on his Fiend Entertainment imprint. Somewhere along the way Fiend started kicking it with Curren$y, possibly the two have known each other since their days on No Limit. Last year the two stirred rumors of a collaborative EP by leaking “Flying Iron” and “Executive Brass”, both of which introduced Fiend as International Jones.

International Jones is an elder statesman, with one foot still in streets and the other stepping into a Executive Maybach. Tennis Shoes & Tuxedos is a 13-track mixtape built around the horn blasts of blaxploitation's pusherman music and International Jones' reinvented flow, still gruff, but smoothed out from the relaxation of over a decade of the finest greenery. Fiend raps “feelin' amped again” on the chorus of “We What's Happenin'”, which features Big K.R.I.T. and Smoke DZA, and it's clear he's dead serious as he keeps the hungry young pups from stealing his show.
