It is no secret how we at Impose love the wonderful Guardian Alien crew. Greg Fox, Alexandra Drewchin, Eli Winograd and Turner “Ramble Tamble” Williams are basically extended family at this point. That's why we couldn't be more proud of our little buddies getting signed to one of our favorite labels, Chicago's Thrill Jockey.
It's basically a no-brainer that this would happen. Impose contributor Maria Sherman tweeted yesterday, “news of guardian alien signing to thrill jockey makes me wonder what took tj so long” – it's that obvious. Greg used to drum in Liturgy, also a part of the Thrill Jockey roster, and if anything, his new group represents their ethos even more: pushing the boundaries of the experiment while still being majorly accessible and deeply psychedelic. They also play with every other Thrill Jockey artist ever, Pontiak being the latest; we also hear that there is a recording of Greg and another Thrill Jockey luminary straight jamming that will be coming out later this year, but it's still under the hush hush (try to guess!).
Guardian Alien alter minds when you see them live, without substances. Bringing their music to a wider audience is imperative, and we estimate that this will be an extremely popular release. While we can't wait to share some music with you, we are under embargo, and must instead recommend that you see the band live if you haven't before. They are curating and performing at a month-long residency at LaSala in Brooklyn, and then cruising down for Hopscotch Festival in Raleigh. Catch them now, before the blow-up, and you will be truly satisfied. Here's a live video to give you an idea; dates below.
