Dirty Beaches' Alex Zhang Hungtai has finally moved to the West Coast (tropical Vancouver, no less) but you'd not be blamed for thinking his scruffy and quiet songs were coming straight out of some Californian garage.
His low pop din sounds as close to the bottom of an empty, dirty hotel swimming pool as it gets. But for all the dudes crafting day-glo distortion and tropical atmospherics, these rustily-produced slow-burners somehow fit right into Night People's spooked tape-deck (which actually seems to be getting increasingly warm fuzz-based) with their scruffy plod and near-evening darkness; well-worth straining your ear below a particularly muffled sort of cassette fuzz.
