Frigid is one of the words that comes to mind, in listening to Haleek Maul's collaborative album with Chicago production duo Supreme Cuts. The impulse is to attribute Supreme Cuts' cold winters on Lake Michigan to the chilly atmosphere of Chrome Lips, but despite Haleek's Barbados upbringing, he's seemed intoxicated by the colder regions since his relocation to Brooklyn. Haleek's Oxyconteen EP was the co-introduction of sorts; a debut of Haleek Maul the rapper and Supreme Cuts the rap producers. Supreme Cuts's production is a nightmare on wax; a cacophonous marriage of the satantic trap resonating through indie rap (see: JIIIM Henson In A Vice Grip and Lil' Ugly Mane's Mista Thug Isolation) and the otherworldly R&B from SC's Trouble full-length. Chrome Lips is the natural progression taken to the highest of heights as every track builds an epic battlefield for Haleek to explore the dark hedonistic instincts in his young skull.
Presented by MISHKA, Chrome Lips features guest appearances by Kool A.D., Squadda B, Mondre M.A.N., Shady Blaze, Deniro Farrar, Tree, ShowYouSuck, and Wiseblood, among others.
