Hands in the Dark records recently launched a “Travel Expop” series, with volume one pointing the ambient finger at France. The release includes one or two tracks from Holy Strays, Cankun, Je Suis Le Petit Chevalier, Voodoo Mount Sister (track list below), and generally carries itself with great composure, hovering stylistically in the range of ambient and collage, with a heavy bent towards the dream over the nightmare and the homemade chemical explosion over laboratory precision. Holy Stray's “Chief” gives off that cloistered northern pale-skin dub sensation perfected by Peaking Lights, but with no less skill and deep-fried guitar lines.
This is a really strong compilation for all craving psych in their ambient soup. Expect nothing less from Hands in the Dark. The collection is out November 26 on limited edition 12-inch vinyl.
