Sometimes the responsibilities of the real world and the stress of personal relationships can prove to be too much and we need to carve out our own zone of escape and comfort. On Happy Diving‘s “My Zone”, the second track off their double A-side 7-inch on their new label Topshelf, the west-coast, pop-punk band invites us to collectively pull up our security blankets. “And you know I don’t / Ever leave my zone,” shouts vocalist Matt Berry over thrashing drums and warped guitar.
On their debut LP Big World (Father/Daughter Records), Happy Diving became the friends you could turn to when life was too overwhelming and you just needed sludgy guitar riffs and earnest lyrics to feel like everything would be okay. Recorded in just four hours with producer Jack Shirley (Deafheaven, Joyce Manor, Whirr), “My Zone” and the single’s first track, “So Bunted”, mark a welcome return for this endearingly loud and frenzied band.
