Maitland, Glimpse

Elizabeth Schneider

Maitland, the Philadelphia based quartet of Josh Hines (vocals/guitar/songwriter), Alex Hines bass/vocals), Evan Moffitt (guitar), and Adam Shumski (drums), are debuting their first full-length album Glimpse.  The self-described indie/folk/rock group have hit it out of the park and created a collection of songs that will stand the test of time.

The album kicks off with “Cup of Love”, a song that has a sound like The Script in the strong opening vocals and layered harmonies. “Sycamore” which was the group’s most recent single, has a completely different sound and feel – more urgent, but with the same harmonies.

The album’s title tune “Glimpse” shows still another side to Maitland.  A slower paced tune, “Glimpse” could have easily been covered by Steely Dan.  It’s lush musically and has range that makes you continue listening to see what might be around the next corner.

To give you a little more background on the feat that is this release, here’s a bit from the band’s bio.

Maitland demoed the tracks just over 2 years ago. During the live tracking process Josh Hines blew out his voice, resulting in months and months of vocal rest. This tragedy was a blessing in disguise. Josh found a new home, a spiritual one, at Omega Institute where he learned to take care of his body, mind, and spirit. Returning to the studio with a new approach, Maitland finished the album and made a more powerful collection of songs than they ever imagined. After Josh’s return, Maitland was selected by Bob Boilen and the NPR team for having one of their favorite Tiny Desk Contest entries in 2017.
