Oozing Wound is an aptly evocative name for this Chicago quartet, but it’s not just any wound. You see, there’s a fictional mythology here, where the Oozing Wound is Holy Mother Mary Magdalene’s stomach and there’s a volatile thrash band screaming into the gaping flesh at fetal Jesus. That’s roughly how the band explains it.
“Welcome to the Spaceship, Motherfucker” is the first track released from their Thrill Jockey debut, Retrash. An extended intro builds thunderous drums to an up-tempo barrage for singer Zack Weil to let loose vocals nearly as obnoxious as Doc Dart. He’s a tempered nasal-shooter firing snot-rockets halfway across a basement circle pit full of unreconstructed thrasher diehards with only Oozing Wound left to rally behind.
