Sean Nicholas Savage, “Suburban Nights”

Sean Nicholas Savage, "Suburban Nights", Other Death

There’s a lot to hate about suburbia. Your faceless Levittown is filled with bland people living similarly bland lives, concerned with their Miracle-Gro lawns, their Ford Fusions, and finishing that Michelob tall boy before having to confront their family after a long day in a cubicle. But for the same reason that some harbor an aggressive desire to escape these tree-lined towns where dreams go to stagnate, others happily choose to play the role of the Man in the Gray Flannel Suit. What one calls dull, the other calls quiet and peaceful.

Sean Nicholas Savage straddles this dichotomy in “Suburban Nights”, the second single from his upcoming album, Other Death. A twinkling piano and Savage’s tender falsetto lull us into sleepy serenity as the lyrics lament suburbia’s suffocating boredom and uniformity. Other Death promises to be his most hi-fi recording to date, and the sparklingly clean production “Suburban Nights” only amplifies its tranquility. As Savage repeats the too-true mantra of, “Suburban nights, all you do is drive,” he leaves us in a numb stupor, just like the communities in question.

Other Death is out September 18 on Arbutus. Sean Nicholas Savage is also embarking on a North American tour in support of the record. Dates are below.
