Stream Trey Mumz’ Southern Gossip

Caitlin Greene

Trey Mumz made a smart choice when deciding to team up with his friend Matthew Lee Cothran (Coma Cinema, Elvis Depressedly) on his new album, Southern Gossip, about which there couldn’t be more positive things to say. First track “What Kind of Day Has it Been?” opens the album with a lyrics-heavy folk song; psych rock “Desert Bug” changes the pace, and then “Part of the Problem” comes in with some unexpected auto-tuned vocals and heavy synths.

For many, this was the year of Alex G (with whom Cothran toured), and Southern Gossip, though completely original, somewhat nods to that notion, in terms of where this generation of lo-fi songwriters is grounded, and where it’s headed. The album, expertly all over the place, should be making it onto your last minute best-of lists of 2014.
