The first time I saw The Funs was in 2011, with Pile, in the irreplaceable wonderland that was the “Mortville” complex.
I became a fan instantly because of their intensity and hooks, but it was this year's self-titled release that really sealed it. Fuzz and reverb are getting a bad rap these days. Too much lazy, boring bullshit. These two, partners in a life adventure to bring you incredibly catchy records. Switching instruments every few songs. Sure, it's sloppy. You can't make out the lyrics, but it's intentional. They just want you to get lost in the noise.
Philip runs an insanely good tape label called Manic Static, putting out great stuff like Coffin Ships and Twin Peaks. He makes his own gritty collage art for everything. They're gracious, wonderful people. Punk rock kids in 2013. Go see them play, on tour as you read this.
