Thumping along somewhere between the esoteric glitch of Oneohtrix Point Never and the alt-dance of The Field is The Soft’s newest track, “Icaria”. Shimmering, ethereal synths blanket the track as monosyllabic and monotone words escape into the void, providing the perfect top layer for the driving bass and drums that hold the track down. “Icaria” manages to to pull transcendence down to earth with its combination of electronic and analog sounds, always reaching up but never quite getting there. That’s not a criticism, though; The Soft have created something different with “Icaria”, something begging to fly up and get pulled down simultaneously. Given the song’s namesake, this quality is entirely appropriate. I’m sure Icarus would empathize with The Soft on this one.
