The Weaks, “Frances Quinlan Will Have Her Revenge on Philadelphia”

Post Author:

When Nirvana released “Frances Farmer Will Have Her Revenge of Seattle,” Cobain infused the rainy city with the spirit of the once infamous television starlet who was forced against her will into a mental institution. Fast forward to present day Philadelphia, where Frances Quinlan’s scraping alt-punk has become part of the backdrop to perhaps the most thriving D.I.Y. music community in the country. Now Philly quartet The Weaks have released a single off their forthcoming album Bad Year, titled “Frances Quinlan Will Have Her Revenge on Philadelphia.” Though this roaring indie anthem is more of a love song than Nirvana’s original ode to a vengeful ghost parodied in the title, the reference feels appropriate. One can see how Hop Along’s folk-pop beginnings turned feminist punk-spirited guitar-pop might have peaked the interest of grunge rock’s golden boy. The single is streaming below.
