UK Singer-Songwriter King Kofi pays subtle tribute to a fallen star on “Amy Told Me,” an uptempo electro-rap tune produced by Birmingham producer Urban Monk. Coincidentally, Kofi met Monk at the Amy Winehouse Foundation in 2016. True to Winehouse’s thematic wheelhouse, Kofi weaves a tale of dysfunctional love, referencing her “Tears Dry On Their Own” classic multiple times.
Kofi has called the track a “personal reflection while using her legacy as a reference to the issues I was facing at the time.” Over a charging bassline and thunderous snares, Kofi solemnly rhymes, “I was just hoping that you would be special I guess you were just what I feared,” before summing up his plea with, “please reply before my heart turns cold.” Lo Roxx augments the lamenting chorus with impassioned vocals, adding an extra element to the already-versatile hip-hop, pop, dance fusion.
Still touring off of his Just A Dude in Need of a Chance album, Kofi’s next project will be due later this year. He’s also planning to release a video for “Amy Told Me,” but in the meantime you can stream below.
