At the core of Lyon-based band Reveille is long-time Grrrnd Zero collective member and vocalist/ guitarist François Virot and visual artist and part-time Alligator drummer/vocalist Lisa Duroux. Their music is simple, and Virot explains that the simplicity comes from necessity—they record themselves with cheap instruments in their practice space, and from a philosophy of making art in ‘‘le style campagne’’ of their favorite Nouvelle Vague director Luc Moullet, known for his primitive style and leftist leanings. What this means is that when you listen to Reveille, maybe you catch glimpses of No Age’s sunny punk or the arty effervescence of Young Marble Giants and Beat Happening. Simple is effective and sincere.
“Revenge” is a track off Broken Machines, their second album with French label Clapping Music, and it kicks off with an errant bass twang and a drum roll that glides into a snappy shuffling beat. Virot’s hooky vocals and uncomplicated guitar melody glue it all together. Sprinkle some fireworks on top, and you have what feels like driving home with the windows down from a day spent at the beach.
Reveille’s Broken Machines is available June 19. You can pre order it here, and catch the group at the dates below.
