Myron & E, “Spook E Halloween”

In part two of Stones Throw's Halloween mix takeover (for part one check out Pyramid Vritra's “Halloween In Glendale 2000” mix) Soul Investiagors Myron & E flex their collection spooky and ghoulish sounds, beginning with a sample first heard on Bushwick Bill's “Chuckwick”.

Myron & E's “Spook E Halloween” mix ventures through spirituals connecting the dots of traditionals to the ghost of Dilla through “People” off Donuts. It had us noticing the breathy vocals Dilla samples as though we'd never heard “People” in the proper context. From there, Myron & E turn back the clock to covers of “I Put A Spell On You” and Stevie Wonder's “Superstition”. Further ghoulish sounds include the experimental madness of Bruce Haack, a track called “Indian Priest” which features the lyrics “please let me out / it's my time for haunting”, and a funk jam that appropriates the celebratory lyrics of the Munchkins from Wizard of Oz, while no Halloween (or night before, aka Devil's Night) should feel complete without D'Angelo crooning about wanting a slice of “Devil's Pie”.
