The Luxembourg Signal
The Luxembourg Signal have been working since 2016 on the completion of their second album Blue Field available later this fall from Shelflife Records / Kleine Untergrund Schallplatten and it is our pleasure & privilege to present the world premiere of their video for the single “Laura Palmer”. A single that itself chants out between two worlds, Luxembourg Signal’s “Laura Palmer” travels across the lost highways that connect hosts of intuitive synth laden audio dichotomies of shared metaphysical experiences & more. Like nature walks through mysterious woods & exploits documented in missing diary pages; The Luxembourg Signal sings out a song of serenity to pacify the mystic presence of a supernatural spiritual world where material topography become something of double entendre entrance into parts unknown. It is this Lynchian notion itself that The Luxembourg Signal hinges their style upon where those eerie driving at night ventures are transformed into corridors that intersect the places between the natural realm, human nature & realms we know nothing about.
Like the expanses of sky & space seen in Twin Peaks: The Return, The Luxembourg Signal taps into those familiar tropes found in David Lynch’s filmography, but specifically the Twin Peaks franchise that has arguably altered the landscape of both film, movies & music by all who have who have found both a personal & creative connective to the source material. Like recalled dream-scapes, forestall northwest passages; floral lakes & more collect together like a forgotten Bang Bang Bar performance booked by the Renault family member that deals in electric guitar close ups, strange camera pans of trees, pyrotechnic sparklers & host of other cryptic & charged visuals. Directed by Ginny Pitchford, the group’s Johnny, Beth, Brian, Ginny (also director), Daniel, Betsy & Kelly are portrayed as unofficial cast members from one of the most storied of cult series of all time. Immediately following the debut for their “Laura Palmer” video, be sure to read our roundtable interview with The Luxembourg Signal:
Tell us about how the works of David Lynch have impacted your work conceptually, creatively to audibly.
Ginny: We all love David Lynch. It’s more than a nostalgia for Twin Peaks—his films are magical, and terrifying. Particularly his use of darkness, and his sound design is like no other. Personally, it’s one of my favorite things about his work. I tend to like making sounds that are dark and slightly unnerving, and that’s what I tried to do with the keys in “Laura Palmer”. The song evolved into a dark story, both pretty and sad, and I wanted the video to be in keeping with that.
Beth: [We] have drawn from his love of static and what lies beneath in our various projects. Dreams, electricity, static.
Describe for us other processes & methodologies & influences that have been guiding you all lately.
Beth: Quite separately I think most of us have subconsciously been thinking about the end of times, the rise of the
machines and the singularity. I read a lot about these subjects and was shocked when I heard the lyrics to Johnny’s
new songs as we’ve not—to the best of my memory—discussed these things, but it’s apparent in the writing. A band separated by seas and connected in paranoia.
Ginny: Definitely true. But at the same time, I think one of the things that sets us apart are our varied interests and
artistic influences that find their way into the music and imagery. Add the singularity to the list!
Have you all had a chance to catch any bit from the third season of Twin Peaks, and what sorts of creative
inclinations has that stirred up?
Ginny: Yes we have been watching. It’s definitely a hold on tight for the ride season. But we’re all happy to have it back,
it’s like the return of a very dear old friend.
Beth: It’s not done anything for me creatively but I’m sure enjoying it! Episode 8 was a thing of sheer beauty.
God bless David Lynch.
Other artists we should be listening to?
Brian: The new Secret Shine, There Is Only Now is fantastic. If you like their early 90s output, you’ll love this album. So so good.
Ginny: Loving the new Jesus & Mary Chain.
Beth: Sacred Paws, Lake Ruth, Jon Brooks, Lorna, Jetstream Pony, The Fireworks, Treasures of Mexico, Chronixx.
Johnny: The new Slowdive and “America’s Dreaming” single by LCD Soundsystem are both welcome returns. Dave Klotz from Fonda has played us some of his new snyth project called “The Dream System” which is something to look out for later this year.
Parting notes & insights of interest?
Beth: Whatever you do, don’t.
