Dan Melchior
Dan Melchior returns today with the following premiere listen to the just released Road Not Driving 12″ courtesy of Ever/Never that offers a cycle of spinning fascinations born out of the primitive & dissonant audio designs. From putting out tapes, wax & recording an album with Austin’s own Spray Paint; Melchior once again showcases an adept proficiency in the arts of being able to wield scuzz-saddled guitars as the paint brush for the tabula rasa canvas of celluloid tape.
The Road Not Driving trip starts off with “I Got a Feeling” that howls, hisses & growls through the gauze of fuzz that could have been some lost 70s counter-culture punk classic. Eco-disasters are observed on the big-blasting tanker-breaker “Another Oil Spill”, that dovetails into the icy-chill of winter blues of being stuck in a lonely place on “Cold Town”, that shivers in that similar manner of isolation of “Bus Stop Ghouls” that is rife with the paranoid feels of a Greyhound station layover spent waiting in a hellish purgatory. A moment of airy & ambient pause provides a moment of sound reflection on the meditational “Relics”, as the entire 12″ arrives to a conclusion with the title track (of sorts) “RD NT DRVNG” that omits the vowels while keeping all the rhythmic riding skronk intact.
