The album itself jumps across the fuzzed-out garage sound spectrum, going from damn near grunge-gaze vibes with the rhythm section on “He Comes In Loudly” to dreary layers of Frankie Rose-like cooing on “Daydreaming”, and then the instrumental “Back 2 Skool”‘s angular guitar that reminds me of The Stone Roses at their best. Maybe the heaviness that ties all 10 tracks together is the toll the East Coast takes on songs that are surf rock at heart.
Regardless of where it came, that sonic weight makes for a band that’s as colorful as they are basement ready; something like a grimace covered in glitter…or rock candy. Sweet but ultimately soured by the soot that ended up in your beer while you were jumping up and down under exposed pipes and concrete. That’s the kind of fun I envision they’re having on “Having So Much Fun”. Not the scene set by the lyrics “Isn’t she wild/Having so much fun dancing in the sun.” The grimey, driving bass line doesn’t sound floaty enough for a girl twirling around Dolores Park. The song conjures the scene of the audience listening to the song, in a dive bar, overheated and banging their heads back and forth as their sweat-sticky clothes collect the residue of previous show-goers.
