With over a year passing since Jonwayne’s Rap Album One debut, the thirst is real for more output, specifically the sort that comes with Gangster Doodles artwork. Though their appearances have been sparse, Jonwayne continues to leave reminders on Soundcloud in form of deep cuts that feel like lyrical exercises to keep his swords sharp. The most recent is “Good Samaritans” featuring Samiyam and produced by Ras G.
Always at home over sinister sounds that thrive on tension notes, Jonwayne treats Ras G’s production like he’s bench pressing the bar. He exhausts all variations of definition and use for “well” without dulling the verse by rhyming common language with precision form. It’s a mixtape joint ultimately, but the presence of Ras G and The Alchemist behind the boards sends a message that perhaps Rap Album Two (not an official title) will see a higher fidelity and more cooks in the kitchen. Then again, maybe not?
