Mndsgn – ‘Rare Pleasure’

L.A. producer crafts beautiful new LP for Stones Throw

Today, the Los Angeles producer Mndsgn unveils his latest album Rare Pleasure, his third record for Stones Throw. Here, Mndsgn steps out of the shadows of beatmaking, displaying his added skills as a vocalist, songwriter and arranger, and conjuring an eclectic effort that fuses samba, film soundtrack textures, exotica, dance, and even old school library records.

Rare Pleasure is chilled-out and loungy, simmering with laid-back riffs, understated percussion, delicate keyboards, and Mndsgn’s soothingly intimate singing voice. The tapestry of sounds ebbs and flows beautifully between sparse stunners like “Masque” and the frenetically-paced closer “Divine Hand II.” Pangs of kaleidoscopic psychedelia push up against more jazzy textures, as evidenced by anchoring tracks like “Rare Pleasure” parts I-IV. That’s all in addition to the previously released singles “Medium Rare,” “Slowdance” and “Hope You’re Doin’ Better.” Ultimately Rare Pleasure is a mood and vibe album, perfect for a blazingly sunny Sunday morning when you’re just trying to lose that hangover. It’s the perfect antidote.
