When you grow up in a small desert mining town and don’t have much else for entertainment, you tend to find alternative ways to spend your time. In MRCH front woman Mickey Pangburn’s case, she turned to music. Her creative efforts in music began early on, as did bandmate Jesse Pangburn picked up the drums after his parents decided to homeschool him. A crazy random happenstance occurred when these two musically-inclined humans met in a music store, and they were married. Now, their sound has evolved (from more Jazz-induced days), and they find themselves creating electronic music for the masses. Their work has been featured in Shameless and an “In Focus” series by Pitchfork/Ford, and have been noted kindly by The Guardian and CMJ. They’ve been touring in support of their latest 5 song EP, I Love You, But You Don’t Know What You’re Talking About, in recent weeks.
I wonder if that’s a sentiment they utter to each other often in their home life?
Today, MRCH premieres their second track off the aforementioned EP with us. Titled “Ruins”, the song is light as air, brought even more onto Cloud 9 with Mickey’s whispery vocals, reminiscent of some of our favorites from the 1980s. Influence stems from several different areas of the industry, but the bassline sounds similar to Rockwell’s “Somebody’s Watching Me” while the way the vocals are delivered–in that fun, 80s synth pop vibe–is similar to Eurythmics’ “Who’s That Girl?” or the way Susanna Hoffs delivers her (slightly deeper) vocals on tracks from The Bangles.
Whichever way you look at it, MRCH is having a love affair–with each other and with their sound. And they’re doing it all right, in our book.
