Rebel Kind, “Kiss You”

Detroit’s alternative indie rock collective Rebel Kind – featuring work by Autumn Wetli (vocals, guitar), Amber Fellows (vocals, drums, bass, percussion), and Shelley Salant (vocals, bass, drums) – has been hard at work on the followup to 2014’s critically acclaimed Today. The lead single from their upcoming work, Just For Fools, is a track that might have you feeling nostalgic for your favorite 90’s romantic comedy starring Freddie Prinze Jr., but we assure you “Kiss You” is nothing like that “Kiss Me” one you know.

A strong guitar, percussion saunters in. Vocals come in quite early, discussing “half lit cigarettes” and telling a “story of how your parents met,” with a slight hint of turn of the century lady punk in the notes. As they croon, “There is something in your eyes that makes me want to kiss you/And you want to kiss me too,” we are transported back in time to when love was simple. “Kiss You”, at its core, is sweet and contemplative while also being a hip swayer.

“‘Kiss You’ captures an utter lack of chill for an enduring crush,” expands Amber, “and in a few words, wild harmonies, and a quarry of guitars, lights up the mess of our own romantic undoing for a solo smoke in the cool night’s air.”

We dig it.

Just For Fools is out December 16th via Urinal Cake. Their album release show will be at Lo & Behold in Hamtramck, MI on December 17th.
