Destiny Frasqueri, aka Princess Nokia aka Wavy Spice is renown for her musical and visual versatility, but the truest sign of her artistic acumen is her ability to remain personable no matter the soundscape. 1992, her latest EP, is no different. Rhyming as Princess Nokia, she pays homage to the “Rotten Apple” that made her “chic but always ‘hood.”
The nine-track project relies on nine different producers, but Princess Nokia does a solid job of maintaining a consistent sonic approach. Known for her eclectic taste and knack for tastefully celebrating bygone aesthetics, Princess Nokia seemingly pays homage to the infancy of trap and bounce music. After the incisive “Bart Simpson,“–in which she kicks off the project’s theme of using 90’s pop culture as a basis for personal reflection—the tracks transition into punchy 808s, swift hi-hats and charging loops.
Project standouts “Saggy Denim” and “Green Line” break up the frenetics with lush, emotive samples. RatKing’s Wiki co-pilots on “Saggy Denim,” bouncing nicely off of Destiny’s intriguing channeling of a Foxy Brown-Max B fusion.
The project is another offering of Princess Nokia at her best, delivering empowering lyricism, AfroLatina pride, and earnest introspection in potent doses.
