Worriers, “Plans”

“Plans”, the latest track from NYC band Worriers, pairs Lauren Denitzio’s raggedy yet radiant vocals with playful riffs and pop-punk catharsis. In just under two minutes the anthemic track oscillates between wanting to stay and looking for a way out. Denitzio depicts the toxic parts of relationships: “started off well then spiraled quickly / couldn’t see the forest through how you treat me,” but stops herself from moving on, telling herself “can’t stop now ’cause we’ve got plans.” The song concludes with an endlessly hummable reminder that life is wide open when you make room for self-sufficiency: “I’ve got plans for me.”

A centrifuge of emotional depth, “Plans” creates heavy anticipation for their full-length release on Don Giovanni Records. The new album, Imaginary Life, a follow-up to 2013’s dynamic Cruel Optimist EP, will be released on August 7 and features production from Against Me!’s Laura Jane Grace. The record’s brevity works to its advantage, emphasizing satisfying, tight, well-planned structures, angsty punk ferocity, and emotive, well-crafted melodies that will charm the ears of its audience.
