Bay Area math rockers unleash mesmerizing first single off upcoming new LP
San Francisco Bay Area math rock duo Floral is one of the great DIY bands of the last decade. In the mid-2010s, they became a favorite in math rock circles thanks to their thrilling live shows and a pair of stunning EPs: 2014’s Floral EP and 2015’s The Second Floral EP. Aside from some live dates here and there, things have been relatively quiet on their end for the last few years. That’s all about to change. Today, we’re beyond excited to share “This Year,” the mesmerizing first single off Floral’s forthcoming self-titled LP, and their first piece of new music in nearly five years.
On “This Year,” guitarist Nate Sherman and drummer Ty Mayer pick up right where they left off, unleashing dreamy melodies and rapid-fire rhythms that ebb and flow in hypnotic ways. An arsenal of noodling riffs interspersed with driving power chords conjure pensive, wistful vibes. Every bit of instrumentation is executed with effortless perfection; all the track’s subtle nuances make it ripe for repeat listens. It also manages to capture a bit of the edge and explosiveness of Floral’s live shows. Definitely a promising sign that their upcoming album will be well worth the wait.
“After the Second Floral EP, we struggled with creating new material as we had moved across the country from each other,” the band shared. “Having lived together and written all of our previous material in the same room, it was a very slow and organic process of learning how to write and continue developing this project given the distance. It wasn’t until the end of writing the Floral LP that we were fully comfortable with that process. ‘This Year’ is the last song we wrote for the Floral LP.”
Recorded with Jack Shirley (whose production credits include Joyce Manor, Deafheaven, Jeff Rosenstock), Floral LP arrives on February 15 via Choke Artist. You can pre-order the album HERE. You can also check out Floral’s upcoming tour dates and give “This Year” a spin below.
