The eleventh edition of the annual Afropunk Festival returned to Commodore Barry Park in Brooklyn, NY on Friday, August 21 through Sunday, August 23. This year, for the first time, there was a fancy dress ball, where there were fashion and voguing competitions and attendees were treated to performances by Bill Coleman, Mike Q, Cakes Da Killa (who performed Afropunk last year as well), and Grace Jones (who also headlined the festival the very next day). Proceeds from the ball went to Afropunk Global Initiative, which dedicates itself to the promotion of diversity in media and the arts in addition to volunteer service. Photographer Coen Rees attended Afropunk’s inaugural Fancy Dress Ball and captured the event for this gallery.
