Creating a video that illustrates loss or remembering without being literal is no easy task. I'm not sure where Broken Water are playing or hanging out in their video for "Chantal Seder", but the juxtaposition of a live performance in a claustrophobic studio space and the mundane act of chilling with friends bookended by worn footage from a crash derby create a slice of Americana that fits authentically with the lazy drawl of their garage leanings. As the scene fades, the question remains if it's all meant as a tribute to someone or something. Drummer Kanako Pooknyw, who directed the video, would only offer that she "was trying to create the floating feeling of detachment after loss."
Broken Water's The Tempest is out now on Hardly Art.
