It’s easy to miss Hand Job Academy’s serious skills as they’re hidden behind a series of silly names: Uncle Meg, Clara Bizna$$ and Ash Wednesday use a patina of internet pop culture to mask self-love braggadocio that you should be copping for your daily affirmations.
“Intricate”, taken from last year’s #IKEAMONKEY, was directed by HJA’s own Uncle Meg. It sees the women do real rap shit; going to discount stores and trying clothes on, jumping around Shea Stadium with a million members of the squad, fuck around on a few train platforms, steal a claw machine, and eat a pizza. It’s fully in that tradition of “we have a camera and we have convinced a ton of friends to go outside in New York in January, let’s just see what we find”-style of video; the hang-out shoot.
These styles of videos are always fascinating. They’re still highly selective with what they show of the artists, each of those shots are the best ones with of people just messing around. In this video is the need to push the force of performers’ personality forward while working in .gif length clips. Here it works to great effect, showcasing everyone’s personalities in even the most mundane goofing around while not overshadowing any individual.
