Stolen Jars are a delicate force. Montclair, NJ’s Cody Fitzgerald and Molly Grund—who’ve brought in many other friends for instrumental support—operate in careful guitar work and intricate vocal harmonies, sometimes light and often more weighted. Last summer the duo released their second album, Kept, which had an orchestral detail to it even at its softest moments. Relentless percussion and thoughtful lyricism granted the record a deep urgency.
“Folded Out” feels full and warm, the fingerpicking of the guitar pressing forth alongside an ethereal horn section as Fitzgerald visits memories with Grund’s light vocals for support. The video, directed by Casey Friedman, matches the music in its intricacy. An impressive work of animation (and of sculpture), it sees a mind unfolding, literally spilling its contents. As light passes over tiny furniture, there’s something so compelling and hopeful lingering in Fitzgerald’s brief intimations. “I will not go / I will not go / let’s be young again / keep your hands close,” he sings, Grund’s soft voice a cushion for the loaded words, and it feels like the sun rising after a long night.
Kept is available now, and Stolen Jars will be touring the US this summer.
