Black Lips star in feature film

In an attempt to memorialize “the movement that was DIY” and the bands, like Husker Du and The Replacements, that epitomized that late 80s punk movement, Springboard Films (which apparently didn't exist before this project), has announced the production of Let It Be, a feature-length film that stars The Black Lips as The Renegades, a fictional pop-punk band navigating through the period's trends and travails, we guess.

The Renegades sounds an awful lot like the Replacements, if you add a bunch of chipper power chords and a few Saves the Day bumper stickers to their amps. Since the Replacements have an album called Let It Be, we're guessing we're not too far from the mark.

Also, we're pretty sure we already got our hands on a sneak peak:

Scheduled to begin production in May of 2008, Let It Be takes place during the late eighties in the post-punk American underground rock scene. Atlanta's notorious Black Lips will play a fictional band who become a symbol of the changing cultural landscape. The movie will be filmed throughout the Southeast and will include notable music of the period and new music written by the band.

Let It Be will be produced by veteran producer Andrew Meyer (Fried Green Tomatoes, The Breakfast Club) and Winn Coslick (The Bottom), and directed by award-winning producer/director Roger Rawlings (Neurotica).
