As a teaser to our summer issue, here is King Khan (a man you will soon serve) and Montreal band The Demon's Claws performing to a German high school classroom. This specific tale did not make the feature article, but is worth sharing nonetheless.
The following was transcribed from a phone interview with King Khan:
“The Demon's Claws came to stay with me a couple days to record in my studio. One of the first days they were here we played this punk squat and got pretty smashed. In the morning the Demon's Claws drummer was walking around near this big high school and this teacher saw him. He had this kill'em all shirt on with skulls and machine guns — classic bad boy gear. This woman started talking to him and asked him 'hey, what are you doing here' and he was like 'I play music.' She got excited and asked him to come play for her classroom.
“So at eight in the morning we all looked like crack heads, we hadn't slept, a lot of drinking and here we are playing in a German classroom. To tell you the truth, we had taken acid the day before. The whole time we were playing we were still tripping. It was probably one of best LSD experiences I have ever had. Their roadie had actually broken into the high school at six in the morning and I found him hanging out of a window. I grabbed him and asked him 'what the fuck are you doing' and he had broken into this chemistry lab. He had done this four times throughout the night, going by himself to play Mr. Professor.”
On June 17 Vice Records will canonize King Khan & His Shrines finest songs on to a package-bursting retrospective called The Supreme Genius of King Khan & the Shrines.
