Mikal Cronin is going through some thangs, but luckily he's got his bro Ty Segall to help him make sense of the Orange County malaise and post-college distress. The two first collaborated on the Reverse Shark Attack 12″ (Kill Shaman), but this time Ty is behind the boards while Mikal pours his moon-born heart into a solo record.
Much like Segall's excellent Goodbye Bread, Cronin is maturing beyond the grimy scuzz with little hint of growing pains. The self-titled LP still sports its fair share of ear-blistering breakdowns and even a bit of skronk, but tracks like “Get Along” prove Cronin is a California son with plenty of heart strings to strum as well. On “Get Along” Cronin is out to get some goddamn catharsis from his lonely reflections. He pulls at the refrain, pausing to possibly let it get the better of him, then breaks free for a rhapsodic finish.
Mikal Cronin's self-titled LP is out September 20 on Trouble In Mind.
