Plateaus, “Open Skies”

Ari Spool

“Open Skies” is the new single off of a 7-inch that came out last weekend on the record label of our lovely friends Art Fag. Plateaus are continuing to bring their low key but catchy pop, and they are growing their catalog a little further past their earlier release on Hozac. This might be the poppiest song they've written yet, joining together elements like diffused afternoon California sunshine, jangly sunscreen-and-reverb-soaked chords, and a real lean-up-against-the-wall-outside-the-7/11-type attitude. Even the art for the 7-inch combines the laid-back with the rebellious, as you can see above: a screenprinted hand holds a joint which is wrapped in an American flag paper and sparkling like a firecracker. Combining a laid-back attitude with a fuck-you attitude is a pretty neat trick when you do it right.
