San Francisco post-punk group levels up on icy, gothic new single
Topographies are a shoegaze/post-punk band hailing from San Francisco and who conjure icily gothic lo-fi soundscapes. There’s a chilling kick to the group’s music, derived from the cold and brooding textures of ’80s new wave. Comprised of members Gray Tolhurst, Justin Oronos, and Jeremie Ruest, Topographies are gearing up to release their debut LP Ideal Form – out Dec. 4 via Funeral Party Records. Today we’re thrilled to premiere the new single from that album, the haunting “False Desire.”
Ominous, reverb-drenched guitars, propulsive percussion and nimble basslines create a hazy and swirling sonic tapestry upon which Tolhurst’s fearless singing voice echoes through. With “False Desire,” Topographies craft yet another beautiful modern update on nostalgic goth-pop. The track is big, lush and dark, and bolstered by poetic and introspective lyrics.
“‘False Desire’ deals with longing in all its forms,” the group shared. “The disconnect between the spiritual and material. How one can never lose themselves in a body, even their own. The body as shell, container for that which can’t be touched.”
